Revitalizing Tradition: Shin Tay Yuan's Modernized Ceramic Decal Factory

googoods Transforms a 50-year-old Ceramic Factory into an Experiential Space

Shin Tay Yuan, a 50-year-old ceramic factory in Yingge, Taiwan, has been revitalized by googoods through a design program with regional characteristics. The company has transformed the factory into a modernized space that communicates the ceramic decal industry's processes and professionalism in a simplified manner.

Shin Tay Yuan was once a major ceramic town in Taiwan, but it faced challenges due to population and industry relocation. The revitalization program by googoods aims to make the ceramic decal industry more accessible to the public, highlighting the factory's professionalism and the value of its products. The ultimate goal is to help people appreciate the quality of life that these daily use articles bring.

The design of the factory incorporates its materials. A punched-plate, a crucial tool in the applique process, is prominently displayed at the entrance. The design concept is derived from screen printing, which is reflected in hanging partitions and indicating systems. The counter is transformed from wooden boards used to stack utensils in ceramic decals production, a common scene in ceramic factories.

googoods has extended the products to interior design, such as tiles for tables and tableware used on site. The white space at the entrance, akin to white porcelain before decals, symbolizes the potential for transformation. The founder of googoods compares decals to printing on a white T-shirt, emphasizing the transformative power of design.

The project, which started in October 2020 and was completed in January 2021, covers an area of 272 sqm. The design process involved overcoming challenges such as distorted space, significant database arrangement, service aspect arrangement, and future branding integration. The team's efforts have been recognized with a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021.

Through this project, googoods has not only revitalized a traditional industry but also created an experiential space that allows the public to understand and appreciate the ceramic decal industry. The Shin Tay Yuan project serves as a testament to the power of design in transforming spaces and industries.
